Juggling Work When Heading Back to College

If you are like most adults who are heading back to college, you are probably going to have to work while furthering your education. While holding down a job and going to college at the same time can potentially be quite stressful, there are a few things you can do to help reduce your stress level and make it easier for you to complete your education while you work.

Discuss Your Education Plans with Your Employer

One of the first steps you should take before heading back to college is to discuss your education plans with your employer. This can be beneficial in a few ways. First, your employer may have a program that will help you pay your college costs. Second, you may be able to work out a new schedule that will allow you to attend classes as necessary. Many employers are willing to help their employees pursue a higher education because a more educated employee is a more valuable employee.

Don't Take on More than You Can Handle

When first heading back to college, you will likely feel a bit overwhelmed by the experience. Not only are you adding more responsibilities to your life, you may also feel a bit uneasy by the whole college experience - particularly if it has been several years since you have been in school or if you struggled in school when you were younger. Therefore, it is a good idea to start off slowly when heading back to school. Rather than taking on several classes, you might want to consider starting off with just one class within a subject you are particularly interested in. This way, you can get your feet wet slowly and give yourself time to get comfortable with the college experience before taking on additional classes.

Look Into Online Schools

Many adults who go back to college choose to pursue their education at an online university or college. With the flexibility provided by online schools, it is easier to work your school schedule around your work schedule. In addition, you don't have to worry about finding the time to travel to a college campus when you attend an online university.

Make Sure to Take Care of Yourself

When you go back to college, it is important for you to be certain to look after yourself. Many adults try to push themselves too hard and, as a result, they are left with no time for themselves. Working while going to school can be a stressful situation, so be certain to make time for yourself so you don't get burned out before you earn your degree or complete your certificate program. Be certain to get plenty of rest each night and to give yourself time to unwind and visit with your friends and family.

Going to college while working a full or part time job can be difficult at times. By working closely with your employer, taking it slowly and choosing the university that best suits your needs; you will be able to successfully complete your education and pursue the career of your dreams.
